Tamas’ friendship with wines started early, as he accompanied his grandfather who tended his of vineyard on the slopes of the Balaton hills and made wine for the family. The vines and the wine were a natural and essential part of life for the family. Having excelled at French in school, he travelled to France to continue his studies, a “visit” which turned into a second home for Thomas.
Learning about French wines began in the vineyard as Tamas began to visit the vine regions of France, meeting the men and women who worked the lands and crafted the wines.
An essential stage of Tamas’ career was the friendship and mentorship of Michelin star chef and renowned sommelier, Patric Pages. His extensive knowledge of wines, personal relationships and memorable tasting experiences cemented the desire to continue in this field and share the skillset with others. It was in the honour of this friendship that one of the first wines was created, the Cuvee Chantoiseau, a Cremant de Bourgogne with the name of the restaurant of M. Pages in the Lozere region of France.
Create authentic, terroir focused wines.
Tamás travels often throughout the major wine growing regions and explores the backcountry for little known treasures.
Through the developing passion for wines and the desire to bridge his two homes, Tamas emerged as the first importer focusing on fine French wines in Hungary. It was pioneer work, bringing the wines of renowned French producers who were yet utterly unknown in Hungary. The scope with collaborations between like-minded merchants and friends developed beyond the borders of Hungary to further European markets, and quickly included excellent Hungarian references.
He had the pleasure and privilege of working with great houses in French wine and Champagne and with several extremely talented and humble winemakers from divers French wine regions. As an ambassador of these reputable brands to Hungary, Tamas and his team of The House of French Wines held numerous tasting and participated in wine-related events in Hungary. The mission was and remains the same; striving to educate enthusiastic consumers about the culture of French wines and gastronomy. Often, the wines and connections with French winemakers became valuable resources for emerging Hungarian winemakers, who were working or rekindling the past of winemaking in the Carpathian Basin.
The House of French Wines developed the culture of Champagne in Hungary, both the consumption of fine Champagne and the improvement of locally made sparkling wine, through the importation of high-quality Champagne houses as Champagne Billecart-Salmon, Champagne Pol Roger and Champagne Bollinger.
As Tamas continued to work, travel and learn, he has created a network of winemakers, chefs, sommeliers and wine aficionados on several continents. It is thanks to these relationships that you can find Tamas and his wines in Europe from Hungary, Italy and France and in both directions across the oceans in Canada and Australia.
“Great love affairs start with champagne…
Champagne HARANGOZO was born by visiting my dear friend Patrick Pagès. Some of the best Champagnes were ageing slowly in his cellar. And how great is an excellent Champagne at its optimum!
